THE MORNING BELL Something happens when I’m sleeping I dream I spend myself cleaning old cobwebs from the ceiling And it get’s stranger after the morning bell I used to wake up with the morning When I’d hear the bell tolling Now I roll over with a sigh And I sleep on through the morning bell Good morning! Pull me from my bed with a slap across my head I’m decomposing with a sadness frozen on my face I walk the city every night I wander aimlessly ‘til first light Then I roll up drunk on a park bench And I fail to react to the morning bell Good morning

about

***1/2
It’s clear from the room-filling sprawl of opening track The Morning Bell that Montreal’s Correa is more than holding his own in front of the song’s full-bodied support from vocalists and horns. His new disc continues on its assured and absorbing path, completely avoiding the sleepy singer-songwriter syndrome that strikes so many of his peers by going all over the stylistic map. While soul seems to be his Rosetta stone, Correa also visits mandolin-driven pop (This Heart’s on Fire, which is reminiscent of ’70s-era Kinks), a touch of New Romantic dreaminess (Juliet) and a George Harrison-style ballad (No Kind of World). Best of all is the gospel-shaded Bring It Down, showcasing the singer’s strong falsetto. This is the sound of a heart beating, not a machine bleating.
